Delta Sigma Theta Celebrates Legacy and Forward Momentum
As the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, prepares to host its 57th National Convention, thousands of members will gather in Washington, DC, from July 8-13, 2025. This event marks a significant milestone, celebrating 112 years of public service, empowerment, and impact within the African American community.
The convention, expected to draw 20,000 attendees in person and an additional 13,000 virtually, aims to uphold the sorority's tradition of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. International President Elsie Cooke-Holmes described the theme for this year’s event as "Forward with Fortitude: A Homecoming of Strength and Purpose," an empowering nod to the past while looking toward future possibilities.
Commemorating a Rich History
Founded on the campus of Howard University by 22 visionary women, Delta Sigma Theta made a bold statement shortly after its establishment by participating in the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Parade, the only Black women’s organization to do so. This legacy of activism, courage, and commitment to community service has shaped the values and motivation of the sorority's 300,000+ members worldwide.
Golf Tournament: Celebrating Leadership in Education and Sports
One of the highlights of the convention will be the Deltas on the Fairway National Golf Tournament, scheduled on July 8th. This event will pay tribute to Helen Webb Harris, a trailblazing educator and community leader who significantly impacted education and sports, illustrating how Delta Sigma Theta honors its leaders and role models.
Recognizing Excellence in Scholarship
The public meeting on July 10th will be the venue for announcing the 2025 recipient of the Dr. Thelma T. Daley Distinguished Professor Endowed Chair. This award, established in 1977, provides essential research support to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and acknowledges the importance of amplifying African American voices in academia. Over $2 million has been awarded to more than 20 institutions through this initiative.
A Collection of Events for Sisters to Connect
Attendees can look forward to various sessions focusing on leadership development, community engagement, and best practices in activism. This rich agenda promises to energize sisters from across the world as they share insights, foster friendships, and strengthen the bonds of sisterhood. By coming together, participants will reflect on their collective journey and empower themselves to boldly engage future challenges.
The Heart of the Convention: Shared Value and Vision
The upcoming convention is not just about celebrating past achievements; it will also focus on the future—what it holds for the sorority, its members, and their communities. With an eye toward new initiatives, the convention aims to inspire attendees to rethink their approach to service and activism in a rapidly changing world.
Final Thoughts: Empowerment Through Unity
The 57th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta is set to be a landmark event where empowerment, legacy, and planning for the future will converge. As members participate, they will leave equipped with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to serving their communities with strength and courage. Now more than ever, it’s important to uphold the tradition of unity and support, ensuring that Delta Sigma Theta continues to be a powerful, transformative force in society.
